About The Mendelssohn Club of Albany
Since its inception in 1909, the Mendelssohn Club of Albany has become the region's longest continuously performing arts group. Today, the Mendelssohn Club is one of the landmark institutions in the Northeast, and a unique part of the cultural life of the City of Albany.
Our male chorus - composed of men with a variety of occupations and interests from the Capital Region, Hudson Valley and Berkshires - performs contemporary, classical, folk, show tunes, hymns and spiritual music through its annual subscription concerts, a Holiday concert held in December and a Spring concert held in May. The Club also performs at other events throughout the year, including the City of Albany's annual Tulip Festival, various sporting events and school music programs.
In an effort to give back to the community, the Club frequently performs benefit concerts for organizations in the Capital Region. We were the featured performers at St. Peter's Episcopal Church's Tricentennial benefit concert, October 2012. We were one of several choruses that appeared in the Voices of Hope benefit at the Delmar Methodist Church, March 2012. In May 2010, a portion of the proceeds from the Club's Spring Concert benefited The Irish American Heritage Museum. Other organizations that have received support from Club performances include the Mohawk and Hudson River Human Society and Big Brothers Big Sisters.
The purpose of the club is to promote the art of choral music through regular performances; encourage and support the careers of young artists; and, from time to time encourage and support the development, by commission, if necessary, of new musical compositions.
The Mendelssohn Club sponsors a vocal competition named after Joel Dolven, who conducted the Mendelssohn Club from 1951-1966. The annual Dolven Awards competition provides young male and female vocalists an opportunity to compete for cash awards to help further their musical studies. The public is welcome to attend, free of charge.
