Our mission is to provide technology training, work readiness skills and educational support services for youth and adults to enhance workforce skills.
NDI is best known for its community development activities. 1n 1995, we received our first grant to provide computer training and information technology for low-income residents of the City of Poughkeepsie. We had 50 slots but received over 300 applications, which informed our decision to fill the technology service gap. While NDI continues to provide ongoing basic to advanced computer training, we have added programs for young adults. Working collaboratively with Dutchess Community College, NDI operates YouthBuild and AmeriCorps programs. These programs provide HSE (formerly GED) prep and certification training in housing construction, healthcare, technology and environmental services for eligible young adults between the ages of 16 and 24. YouthBuild/AmeriCorps trainees rehabilitate low-income rental housing in the neighborhoods where they live. in 2014 we completed the renovation of 206 Winnikee Avenue, a two-family low-income housing unit with the help of YouthBuild trainees and seasoned professionals. Both apartments are occupied. Recently, NDI acquired a multifamily house from the City of Poughkeepsie, which serves as the construction site for our YouthBuild program. Renovation has begun and should be completed by December of this year.
NDI also administers summer youth employment programs. Youth receive employment opportunities in gardening, landscaping, and environmental services.
