Can You Spot the Red Flags?

Do you know how to spot common red flags that indicate your nonprofit might be developing a serious financial management problem? The best way to protect your nonprofit from disaster is to know how to recognize signs that you should investigate what’s happening and take corrective action if needed. All nonprofit leaders and managers should have this core skill.

During this session we will:

  • Consider common areas for incorrect reporting and financial missteps at nonprofits, and the risks associated with them, including: travel and entertainment, corporate credit cards, loans to disqualified persons, reporting of compensation, related party transactions, use of donor advised funds, and more.
  • Identify indicators that fraud risks may be occurring at your nonprofit, including exposure to potential embezzlement or diversion of assets, and discuss what steps to take if this is happening.
  • Discuss how nonprofit leaders can review financial statements and budgets to detect early warning signs of mission drift and other red flags and manage these issues in a timely way.
