Capital Roots 594 River Street Troy, NY 12180 http://www.capitalroots.orgWelcome to Capital Roots - formerly Capital District Community Gardens. Capital Roots is a non-profit community service organization that has been helping residents of Albany, Rensselaer, Saratoga, and Schenectady Counties improve their neighborhoods and access healthy food for forty years. Our mission is to nourish healthy communities by providing access to fresh food and green spaces for all.
Our 50 community food gardens foster self-sufficiency and help families cut their living costs by growing their own food locally. We transform vacant lots into productive neighborhood garden spaces, and beautify urban areas through landscaping and street tree programs.
Capital Roots provides access to fresh food through innovative programs like our Veggie Mobile travelling produce markets and our Healthy Stores Initiative - which places refrigerated produce display units in neighborhood convenience stores and provides store owners with access to wholesale pricing so that they can offer healthy food to their customers. Our Squash Hunger program utilizes volunteers to "rescue" extra produce from farmers, gardeners, and retailers and bring it to emergency feeding programs throughout the Capital District.
Education programs like our Taste Good Series and Produce Project provide inner-city children and teens with the opportunity to build healthy eating habits and develop valuable job and life skills.
