About MoCA: Mission and Vision

The Museum of Chinese in the Americas (MoCA) is the leading museum dedicated to reclaiming, preserving and presenting the history and culture of Chinese people in the United States. MoCA is committed to encouraging dialogue among people of all cultural backgrounds through thought-provoking research and programming.

MoCA strives to push the boundaries of historical exhibition work and cultural programming. Exploring Chinese America within the context of American history and culture, MoCA gathers and documents the personal stories of Chinese Americans, communicating their traditions, struggles and achievements. MoCA is committed to challenging stereotypes and tackling difficult and complex issues, both historical and contemporary. MoCA traces the many places of origin of Chinese Americans and their connections to families and homelands throughout the world. MoCA creates engaging and accessible, quality programming for people of all ages to be experienced in its own facilities, in traveling exhibitions and online.

MoCA Expansion Capital Campaign

MoCA has announced an expansion project to be completed in 2008. The new space will be designed by renowned architect Maya Lin whose work includes the famed Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. The new space located at 211-215 Centre Street is 12,500 sq.ft. -- or five times the size of MoCA's current facilities. Initial plans for the expansion include exhibit galleries, bookstore, visitors lounge, offices and multi-purpose rooms. The 70 Mulberry Street site will be renovated as an archives and library facility.

To meet the costs of the expansion project, MoCA has begun a capital campaign to raise $15 million. We are proud to announce that our quiet fundraising efforts have secured the following lead grants: $1.74 million over three years from The September 11th Fund*, $1.5 million in capital pledges from the New York City Council and the Mayor’s Office through the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, and a $200,000 planning grant from the Lower Manhattan Development Corporation.

Now we need your help to raise the remaining amount. Your support is the fertile ground upon which MoCA's work can blossom. Give today, and help nurture respect for our past and hope for our future generations!
