New Y ork Says Thank Y ou Foundation, started in 2003 at the suggestion of a 5-year-old boy , is a growing national
and global pay it forward service movement that is creating transformative solutions based on survivor
empowerment in disaster relief , education, and the arts. The mission of New Y ork Says Thank Y ou is to build hope
and provide healing to people around the world as a way to continually “pay it forward” for the humanity ,
kindness, and volunteer spirit New Y orkers – and all Americans – experienced on 9/12.
We operate five inter-related programs focused on survivor empowerment in disaster relief , education, and the
arts: 9/11 Anniversary “barn-raising” , Hurricane Sandy First Responder Rebuilding Fund, National 9/11 Flag
Restoration, 9/12 Generation Project, and Stars of HOPE.
Our core disaster relief project is our annual 9/11 Anniversary “barn-raising” where we empower survivors from across the United States to help rebuild and strengthen communities recovering from their own tragedy through large scale community-wide volunteer projects.
In the wake of Hurricane Sandy , New Y ork Says Thank Y ou Foundation was privileged to help rebuild and repair over 130 homes for New York area first responders and their families displaced by the storm. This was the largest scale and longest term home rebuilding commitment we have ever made in our Foundation’ s 10-year history.
As part of our nationwide disaster relief efforts, New York Says Thank Y ou Foundation became the custodian
for The National 9/11 Flag, a 30 foot-American flag destroyed in the aftermath of the collapse of the World Trade Center . Rescued from Ground Zero in late October , 2001, the flag was first stitched back together by tornado survivors in Greensburg, Kansas on the 9/11 Anniversary 2008. Our Foundation had the honor of taking the flag on a 50-state journey where we empowered 30,000 people in local communities nationwide with the historic privilege of stitching the flag back to its original 13-stripe format using fabric from retired American flags in all 50 states. It is now part of the permanent collection of the National September 11 Memorial & Museum.
The 9/12 Generation Project the education and service-learning division of New York Says Thank You Foundation. The goal of The 9/12 Generation Project is to inspire and educate 1.5 Million middle school and high school students with
the positive, timeless, and universal lesson of citizenship that emerged from 9/12 and activate these students in service projects related to disaster relief , community revitalization, and the arts. As of February 1, 2015, The 9/12
Generation Project is being managed by American Public Education Foundation and we are proud to support its
continuing growth and expansion nationwide.
Our Stars of HOPE® program empowers children to use the healing power of art to transform communities impacted
by natural and man-made disaster . Run in partnership with Groesbeck Rebuilds America, our Stars of HOPE program
reaches broad and deep in strengthening communities in need, impacting at-risk youth, and bolstering the mental
health of children, families and entire communities in the wake of tragedy . Stars of HOPE has empowered an estimated 30,000 disaster survivors and volunteers to transform communities impacted by disaster in 40
communities around the US and 3 global communities (Kessennuma, Japan; Omagh, Ireland and Nairobi, Kenya).
The secret to our growing success if simple: We Turn tragedy into HOPE.
