This course will concentrate on contemporary models of trauma theory and treatment. Our focus will be on integration of psychoanalytic/psychodynamic treatment with other effective procedures and modalities, including the use of relaxation and internal resourcing, EMDR, Internal Family Systems Therapy, Sensor motor Psychotherapy, Somatic Experiencing and mindfulness practices. Via readings, videos and experiential exercises, students will learn to incorporate some fundamental mind-body techniques into their practice and will be introduced to a variety of more complex approaches that they may wish to pursue in greater depth at a later time. We will also examine counter transference and vicarious traumatization, along with self-care strategies.
Students will learn to cultivate a more mindful and embodied stance both internally and relationally and will also learn how to help their clients become more safely embodied and present in their lives.
