Spring Sugaring
and Saw Mill Tour
What can you get from 40 acres of
woods in Hebron?
Plenty!
On March 20, from 10:00 a.m. to noon, John
and Peg Underwood will welcome ASA and guests to tour their conserved property,
sugaring and saw mill operation.
John
and Peg put in 140 taps and have been making syrup for friends and family for
years in a beautiful sugar shack which was hand built using timber from their
own woodlot.
You will also learn more about what
that diamond shaped TREE FARM sign really means, see a small sawmill in action,
and view a collection of forest products harvested from and used on the
property.
The Underwoods have put a lot of hard
work into their land over the years, developing a forest management plan, digging
a pond and building the sugar shack and saw mill. To protect their investment
and ensure the property’s future as a productive forest, they chose to donate
an easement to ASA in September, 2008. The Battenkill Conservancy was
instrumental partner in this collaborative project.
Come celebrate the first day of
Spring with the Underwoods and ASA on this “sweet” tour! It will be a great
opportunity to see a small scale sugaring and forestry operation up close and
ask questions of the owners.
