Introduction to Wild Mushrooms

Have you ever been curious to find out more about the wild mushrooms in our region and wished you had some expert guidance? This summer ASA is pleased to offer you a unique opportunity to go foraging with noted mycologist Sue Van Hook on properties we’ve helped protect.

Sue will lead a series of two-hour mushroom forays throughout the spring and summer.  You are invited to attend as many as you'd like, but first you need to learn the basics of identifying the groups of fungi.  To avoid re-teaching the basics, we ask that you attend the winter lecture as a prerequisite to the summer collecting forays. This way you can really advance your identification skills and enjoy more species.  

The first evening introduction to wild mushrooms will be held at the Greenwich Public Library on Wednesday, March 10th from 6:30-8 pm. Cost to attend the lecture is $10 per person. Be sure to bring a notebook and pen.  Sue will have copies of How to Identify Mushrooms to Genus I: Macroscopic Features by David L. Largent for sale ($20). This introductory lecture will be offered again in March and April at different locations.

ASA will then host summer foraging trips on conserved farms with Sue on June 5^th, August 7^th and September 18^th from 10 a.m. to noon. Each outing will be $10/person and locations will be determined with plenty of advance notice to registrants.

Sue will also be conducting trips with other local organizations, giving you plenty of opportunity to get out and forage with expert guidance.
