JOHN PRINZ, esteemed former principal dancer with the New York City Ballet and American Ballet Theatre, in association with DanceTracksNYC, is pleased to present a spectacular evening of classical and contemporary ballet, highlighted by dances by John Prinz, Gelsey Kirkland and Michael Chernov, and an appearance by New York City Ballet dancers Rachel Piskin and Ralph Ippolito.
Program:
John Prinz, Artistic Director, has created "Just For Me," a solo for gifted young dancer Temple Kemezis, in which the stage is the studio and the audience is the mirror.
For NYCB dancers Rachel Piskin and Ralph Ippolito, Elena Kunikova has staged the pas de deux from "Harlequinade," choreography by Petipa, music by Drigo. Ms. Kunikova is a graduate of the Vaganova Ballet Academy (the Kirov Ballet School) in St. Petersburg and was a principal with the Maly Theatre Ballet of St. Petersburg, dancing all the ballerina roles.
Michael Chernov and Gelsey Kirkland have choreographed two solos for Ms. Kirkland's young student Teele Ude: "Epiphany," inspired by the 1879 painting "Joan of Arc" by Jules Bastien-Lepage, music by Shubert, and "Stealing Time," music by Kurt Weill. A native of Estonia, Ude was recently seen in New York in Cirque du Soleil's "Wintuk" at Madison Square Garden, and is currently preparing to participate in the upcoming Helsinki International Ballet Competition.
Teele Ude will return with partner Albert Davydov, principal dancer with the New Jersey Ballet, for the "Flames of Paris" pas de deux staged by David and Anna-Marie Holmes from the original by Vasily Vainonen. (The first performance in the West of this spectacular pas de deux was presented in 1972 by American Ballet Theatre - danced by Eleanor D'Antuono and John Prinz.)
Ted Thomas and Frances Ortiz will present their ten-member Thomas/Ortiz Dance Company in "For Love or Grace," duet to Misa Criolla sung by Jose Carreras; "Frayed Ends," duet to music by Rachmaninoff; and "Un-Damely," a group dance to music by Vivaldi.
James Kinney, with a background mainly in musical theater (seen on Broadway in "Fosse," "Sweet Charity," and other musicals) has created "Another Hundred People," to Sondheim's song of the same name from "Company," performed by an ensemble of seven Broadway dancers.
Melanie Cortier will present her Eidolon Ballet, known for its accessible, unorthodox and fun-loving style, in "Apposition," a five-dancer work set to a modern jazz percussion score.
Kate Thomas will present her Company in the spirited new "Appalachian Suite," music by Molly Slemp and Mark O'Connor.
DanceTracksNYC was founded in 1998 by producer Pamela Pardi, who has presented regular showcases in NYC, most recently at The Clark Studio Theater. The organization was founded to provide opportunities for ballet dancers to create and perform work, and does so by presenting an artful blend of classical and contemporary choreography by talented dancemakers.
