Groundwater provides half of all drinking water in this country and 40% of all agricultural irrigation, but most Americans don't understand the sources of groundwater, how it moves beneath the ground, or what happens when it becomes polluted. Our mission is to develop internet-based mapping tools and editorial content that can help educate people about groundwater flow and contaminant fate and transport. Our mapping tools will provide estimations of the depth to water, and the velocity and direction of groundwater flow for many states. This information can be used to delineate well protection zones and identify the destination of contaminant plumes. These tools will be free, user-friendly, and interactive. As individuals and organizations become more educated about groundwater, they will be more empowered to protect the quality of their water supply.
