Did you know that children and youth in foster care experience mental health problems at rates far higher than other children? Research indicates that anywhere from 40 to 85% of these youngsters suffer from a mental health disorder, and fewer than one-third receive treatment. Fewer than 3% of mental health providers work with children in foster care.
The Fostering Connection provides high-quality, long-term, pro bono psychotherapy to children, youth and families affected by foster care in New York City. By carefully screening and matching children, youth and adults who are referred to us from a variety of sources with a private practice therapist who volunteers with us, we are able to create valuable relationships for these children and youth who may not have many caring, long lasting relationships in their lives. Recognizing that this volunteer work is challenging for the therapist as well, our therapists participate in a weekly peer consultation group. The Fostering Connection also provides other professional development opportunities and is always working to evaluate and strengthen efforts to serve this vulnerable population.
