Peoples' Symphony Concerts (PSC), the City's oldest concert series, was established in 1900 by Franz X. Arens and has played a major role in the lives of countless New Yorkers. Too poor to attend many concerts in his youth, Arens returned to New York from studying conducting in Europe determined to find a way to bring music to students, teachers, workers and others at affordable prices. The first series featured five orchestral programs at Cooper Union with tickets for as little as 5 cents each.
Today PSC presents three concert series of six recitals each. Audience members have heard the world's foremost concert artists and ensembles at Washington Irving High School (previously the National Conservatory of Music) and Town Hall, at the lowest admission prices of any major series in the country. A subscription for one series of six concerts costs only $32 or $48.
Through contributions from the public and through the generosity of the artists, who play for a fraction of their normal fee, our tradition continues as we reach out to seniors, students, individuals and families on limited incomes to bring the gift of music to the community.
