Since 1978, the Center has helped define urban environmental education in New York City. Thirty years later, we are the premier Educational Guide to a more sustainable future - reaching more than 100,000 New Yorkers annually across the five boroughs with educational programming that brings together residents, schools, businesses and community leaders in efforts to shape the healthy and sustainable development of New York City.
Programmatic Overview
• School-based programming, the Center’s largest division, provides environmental education opportunities to students in grades Pre-K - 12 throughout New York City, drawing from a catalogue of over 100 award-winning educational courses and 30 professional development workshops designed and instructed by the staff's experienced educators;
• Our Urban Tours program in spring, summer, and fall leads participants on an exploration of the historical, cultural, architectural and environmental aspects of neighborhoods throughout New York City;
• The annual Green Brooklyn…Green City event convenes more than 3,500 individuals to participate in a free day-long series of workshops, guest speakers, vendors and resources focused on green design and sustainability;
• After-school enrichment programs in the community include: three family and one adolescent literacy site; “Cultural After School Adventures,” environmental education programming and arts- and science-based programming for elementary and middle school students; Out-of-School Time program sites, providing homework help and urban environmental exploration; and Service Learning programs, engaging high school students in a mix of formal instruction, service activities at local community based organizations, and reflection on service experiences;
• Public programs on evenings and weekends offer dialogue and participation around a wide range of environmental issues and initiatives. By centralizing information, resources, and activities of many groups, the Center can function as a “one-stop” environmental community center; and
• The Center is home to the recently launched Sustainable Business Network of New York City – New York’s first chapter of Business Alliance for Local Living Economies (BALLE), a national alliance of local business networks in North America that are building living economies in their regions, which has over 70 business members to-date.
